Crate training includes teaching your dog how to be comfortable in a small crate like confined area. It stems from the instinct prevalent in dogs that prevents them from soiling their own quarters. Dogs are animals that even if left on the streets would retreat to a sheltered corner for some quiet time and refrain from soiling that area. So crate training appeals to this natural tendency during the process of housebreaking. Even though it's easier to crate train a puppy, adult dogs can also be housebroken through crate training.

For crate training to work with housebreaking, it's best to stick to a rigid schedule when it comes to meal times, hours of play and elimination. Refrain from leaving your dog stuck in a crate for long periods of time. He may not be able to control his bladder and will end up relieving himself in the crate itself. So, as soon as you release him from the crate immediately take him to relieve himself preferably to the same place every day. The maximum that a puppy can be crated is for 4 hours at a time. Ideally, you shouldn't crate a puppy for more than a couple of hours at a stretch.

To set a feeding and elimination pattern, feed your dog regularly at fixed time intervals. So this will give you an idea about when he needs to eliminate. Puppies have weak bladders and need to relieve themselves frequently, generally 10-15 minutes after their meals. Adult dogs can hold it in for longer periods of time. So feeding your dog at fixed timings helps in crate training and housebreaking.

When housebreaking a puppy, to get him habituated to eating his meals inside the crate, begin by feeding him as close to the crate as possible. Then place his meals at the opening of the crate and gradually move it right inside until he can eat his meals while inside the crate. After some time shut the door while he is eating.

To motivate a puppy or an adult dog to stay in the crate, you can throw in a treat now and then. Also keep a toy that your dog can play with and a small bowl of water to quench his thirst. The most important thing, though, during the initial stages of housebreaking is not to confine him for long periods of time. And never ever use the crate as a punishment.

It's not difficult to housebreak a dog if you use crate training to pull this off. A dog's natural instinct for seeking a cozy shelter and his innate tendency to refrain from soiling his den will make things easier for you. This is why crate training works like a charm when it comes to housebreaking your dog.
