. If that's the case, don't forget there are many other options for careers in music. One such career is music production. Unlike some other careers in the industry, music producers typically need a college degree, so here are the basics you should know about music production colleges.

The first step to any college career including on in music production is to pick the college. So what should you find out about a college before making your decision?

One of the most basic of all is to ensure that the college is accredited. If it's not, the program may not meet national standards and the credits may not be accepted by other institutions.

Once you have narrowed the list to accredited colleges you can focus on what each individual college offers. Some things to look at are they specific courses they offer and which of those courses are required and allowed for the program you are applying to. Beyond the courses offered colleges can also distinguish themselves through other programs such as those which help students get internships during school or jobs after graduation. One standard measure of success you can check is there statistics on how many students have jobs in the industry within a year of graduation.


After taking all of these questions into account and choosing a college, they next step will be to pick your courses. Ever college will offer some variety, but there are some general subjects you will want to cover anywhere.

Some of the basic topics include musical history, composition, artist management, product management, marketing/ advertising, songwriting, ear training, music publishing and distribution, and finance. Although not all of these topics relate directly to what you will be doing on a daily basis it's important that you are well versed in other aspects of the industry and that you have at least a very basic understanding of what the people you will be working with are doing.

One person you may work with often is the sound engineer, and, in fact, many music producers begin their career as sound engineers. Since there is a great deal of cross over between these two positions it may help to also do a bit of studying in this direction. For example, a solid understanding of recording software and equipment and knowledge of many different types of music would be helpful.

There are any number of college across the U.S. as well as internationally which offer music degrees or possibly even concentrations in music production. Most of these programs, however, don't go in depth enough to fully prepare you for a career in music production. For this it would be best to attend a music school which has a program specifically for production. Among the top music production colleges in the U.S. are Columbia, FullSail and Berklee Universities.
