How Do You Go About Teaching Children Discipline

What sort of parent are you? You have quite a few models to choose from. First there are the control freaks who monitor everything and are strict. Then there are those parents who never say no' to their kids because they are their best friends! In between, there are a whole host of parents wondering how on earth you go about teaching children discipline.

Let us take the word discipline' for a start. Discipline usually means punishment for most people. But when we look at the origin of the word, which means disciple or pupil, we are on a much better track of understanding what it really involves. It involves teaching our kids life skills. Punishment or consequences should be rarely used and certainly do not need to be the staple diet.

Spanking and physically punishing children is still an amazingly popular way of dealing with children discipline issues even in the third millennium. This means that we have not progressed so much over several thousand years!

If we adopt this approach, we are sending the wrong message:-

children who are beaten or spanked know that violence is accepted by their parents

children who are beaten become violent adults

children may become bullies because they see that violence is effective

children become tougher and can even shrug off violence as they become physically stronger themselves. Parents become older and weaker so it is a no win situation!

children learn absolutely nothing about why they were punished and even how they should behave in the future.

The Academy of Pediatrics is convinced that this way of teaching children discipline is of no use at all. The reason is that nobody has bothered to explain to the punished child why the misbehaver caused such a fuss and what the consequences might be. There is no effort to teach being responsible and accountable for his or her actions. A good slap is much faster and much more effective. It may be in the short term but for the reasons, I have listed above, it is absolutely un- educational.

Many parents of course do not spank or beat their children but they are angry that they have tried everything and nothing works. Teaching children discipline seems to be a mirage.

They have tried time outs, consequences but with little success. The know that they must not give in to violent behavior because that will only convince the kid that this strategy works.

The secret of teaching children discipline in the best way possible is to find the right mix of being affectionate and giving support while still imposing limits .Making sure that kids know the rules from early on is very important too.
