How Do You See Yourself In The Last Third Of Your Life?

Think about an image of an elderly person in your minds eye

. Do you see a frail wobbly; man or woman hunched forward leaning on a walking stick for support, sagging wrinkled flesh and no muscle tone? Maybe you have seen someone like that in your own family or circle of friends.

We used to think this was normal that this is how it is when we get old and it was just something we had to accept. You may even remember the commercial that depicted a poor pathetic older woman who says "I've fallen and I cannot get up". Fortunately for her she had purchased an electronic emergency notification to wear around her neck.

Life does not have to get like this in the last third of our life. Sadly many people, curtail physical activities as they get older as they fear losing balance, falling and breaking a bone. Yet a simple strength training program just 2-3 times each week is the single most important thing you can do to avoid the horror that comes with crippling bone breaking falls and subsequent debilitating injury.

When you perform proper exercise there is not reason to 'slow down' as you get older. In fact it is entirely possible to remain strong, vibrant and active throughout your entire life span. But this optimum state of strength and health does not happen on its own, it does require an action plan and following through with that plan


You may think you a doing a good job warding off the ravages of aging by getting the recommended 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week but you might need to think again particularly if your activity is limited to low intensity endurance type activity that does not directly work your muscles.

You may have heard how important it is to keep your heart healthy by 'cardio' type activity. However having the heart of a marathon runner does not protect you from falling and breaking bones, from creeping muscle tissue loss or from joints that get stiff painful and no longer work so well.

Proper strengthening exercise is more important than any 'cardio' type activity you can do. Save these things for your recreational activity, your 'fun' and active lifestyle but they should never ever replace proper exercise if you want to stay out of a nursing home.


One of the best ways to prevent and even reverse the effects of aging is strength training. Years if not decades of lost muscle and bone strength which is the number one bio-marker of the aging process can be wiped away with a proper exercise program. You can even become stronger and fitter than you have ever been in your life. How exciting a possibility is that?

Not only can you become stronger, but leaner and trimmer, have more 'get up and go', more energy, sleep better, feel happier, and have more vitality and vigor no matter what your age. In fact the older you are the more quickly you need to get started so you can avoid going down that slippery slope for as long as possible.

You have the power to decide how you want your future to be. If you are not already following a consistent strength training program, consider doing so now. Not only can you prolong your life but you can improve the quality of that life as well.
