How Does G6PD Affect You?
Symptoms of G6PD are usually not noticeable except in severe cases
. When the deficiency is severe, common symptoms include extreme fatigue, pale skin, jaundice (particularly in infants), forgetfulness, muscle aches and pains, and similar symptoms. When the deficiency is mild, it may be treated with simple medications or even just an iron supplement. However, if it is severe, regular trips to the hospital for blood transfusions may be required to re-stock the body with a supply of oxygen-rich blood cells. Sometimes, it can be cured completely, especially if it was developed as an adult. In other cases, especially the hereditary ones, it may need lifelong treatment. Fortunately, it is easily manageable and people who have it should be able to lead relatively normal lives.
