How Energy Is Helpful For Sports And Marathons
If you're going to join certain events that requires endurance
, like triathlons, then you're going to have to manage the energy reserves in your body. Since we don't really know how much energy we have, trying to manage it will be difficult.
Storing Energy
Energy nutrition is important for our daily activities and we get it from the food that we eat everyday. Glucose, which we get by eating complex carbohydrates like pasta and bread, is used to give us the energy we need. Excess glucose is stored in the liver and muscles, and these glucose that are not needed are converted in glycogen. These glycogen are then stored as fat.
Using Energy
When we exercise, the available energy is quickly used by our body. The stored glycogen reserves are then drawn out, helping us in terms of endurance. Unfortunately, when it comes to storing glycogen, our body's ability to do so is limited. When the stored glycogen decreases, the body then relies on stored fat for its extra energy. Unfortunately, it takes time to turn this fat into energy and it's not as effective as glycogen. If you notice that during the later stages of the event the athlete tends slow down it's mainly because they're using fat as energy and burning energy at a very fast rate.
Going as Far as You Can
Those athletes that weigh 150 lbs can store about 1800 calories as glycogen. This stored glycogen can be used for approximately 2 -3 hours, depending on how intense their effort and activity will be. For example, a marathoner who has consumed their glycogen reserves wouldn't be able to go on beyond miles 18 -20. However, with training, the muscles get accustomed to storing more glycogen. Not only that, it lets the body get accustomed to burning fat for energy when the glycogen available decreases.
What are Nutrition Supplements
Power bars and gels are used by athletes to help improve their energy stores during events. They may or may not work, it all depends on the sport and event. Some runner, like me, find it difficult to digest power bars or gels during marathons. During your training, it's advisable to give these products a try. Becoming more popular are products like FRS and Hornet Juice. Not only are they easier to digest, but they also provide athletes with more energy.
However, proper training is still the most important for any athlete. Missing some workouts may cause you to falter during events and you can't do your best with just an energy nutrition supplement. Athletes that are experienced and trained for endurance know how to properly pace themselves. They know that going too fast at the beginning means using up available energy. You can achieve your very best by training hard and taking appropriate nutritional supplements during the day.
