How Entrepreneurs Can Stay Motivated When Things Don't Go As Planned
The road to success is full of challenges
The road to success is full of challenges. With all the work that goes into building a business, it's easy to get bogged down when things don't go your way. Instead of focusing on the reason you started your business in the first place, you begin to focus on smaller, more immediate issues that can be overwhelming and tedious. When you find yourself feeling discouraged, step away from the situation and gain some perspective to re-kindle your drive and motivation.
-Don't forget why you started. It took a lot of motivation and excitement to make the decision to start building a business. Try to remember how you felt when you made the decision and what motivated you to do it. Envision yourself living the life you will build for yourself with your business. Taking a moment to focus on the big picture can be very effective in lifting your mood and reviving your sense of purpose.
-Give yourself credit for how far you've come. It may feel like you still have a long way to go to reach your ultimate business goals, but it's important to acknowledge the progress you've made. Recognizing how your work has paid off and taking note of what you've built will help you realize what great things you are capable of.
-Talk to someone. It doesn't matter if you don't have an expert business mentor or confidante that's qualified to give good advice. Share your challenges with someone that cares about your success and happiness. Understanding that people want you to succeed can boost confidence and give you the motivation to pick up and keep going.
-Change your strategy. The upside to any setback is the opportunity to learn. If you can think of a way to change the way you do business to avoid similar challenges in the future, do it. The more you learn, the more refined your business will become. Also, when you come up with a plan to get your business back on track, set specific, measurable goals that you can attack one at a time until you are back where you want to be.
-Get help. There is no shame in asking for help when you need it. The best business people do a lot of delegating and it gives them more time to focus on the big picture. Don't dig yourself into a crisis before you get help, do it now and avoid the nasty cleanup.
The best thing you can do to stay motivated overall is believe in yourself. You have the ability to change the way you act, the way you do business, and the way you live your life. Getting the right attitude will give you the energy to persist in the face of struggles. This tenacity will be your greatest asset in building the company and lifestyle of your dreams.
