How I Lost My Job and Won My Life - A New Strategy to Managing My Destiny

There are statistics from a survey in the UK that three out of four people say they are working very hard (so what's the other one doing?) and that the two biggest concerns are long hours and work intensity. Most people are working as hard as they can and could not imagine being able to work any harder and that on average one in five people take work home almost every day.

Statistics, however, tell only one side of the story as many of you readers will be thinking it's worse than this (not too many will think it better I would guess).

The part that is missing is the human element - what happens to you and me? Most of us are laden with gadgets that make us accessible to work (and friends) 24/7 and more and more bosses are taking advantage of this. Sad to say, but one in three partners of people who typically work more than 48 hours a week feel that this has had a negative effect on personal relationships, and worryingly, only one third of workers say their employer has any family-friendly practices or personal support services in place.

Do they care? This is only intensified by the fact that most people will move from one job to another, doing the same work for different organisations, and end up falling foul of the following equation:

Hard work and effort = success in career = promotion and more money = more and harder work = less time at home =??? (you complete it for you).

So what do you do about it? Well I had an opportunity to get off this treadmill at the end of 2009. I had worked hard in a job, been part of a takeover and seen lots of colleagues lose their jobs (the company I worked for had 1,800 employees which was reduced to 550 in a 3 month period). I survived the cull with a better job (promotion) but the next 12 months were hell. More job cuts (another 200 left) and I ended up doing a job that 7 other people had been employed to do).

By the end of 2009 I was exhausted and burned out - when another round of job cuts was announced. By this time I was glad to go and gained my freedom in January 2010.

It's funny that throughout 2009 there was always an anxiety about losing my job - paying bills, keeping the house etc. But since I left, this has rarely entered my mind. I have a new career, being my own boss spurred on by something that my wife said to me (which is as valid as any well paid management guru).

'Work for yourself and control what you do, when you do it and how you do it. Don't allow yourself to be put in the position where someone else has absolute power over your future.' So I have lost my job but do feel that I've gained my life back - I'm more relaxed and people comment that a weight has been lifted from my shoulders (and they envy me this). So what stops them, and what stops you from doing the same?
