How Important Is Luxury When Buying A New Car?

When it comes to buying a new car, if you're the type of person who knows exactly what they want

, it's more than likely that you've got a good understanding of the luxury features that you're car should have.

If you're the type of person to simply know that you need a new car and some basic amenities (i.e., a CD player or air conditioning), though, chances are you'll base your judgement on whether to buy a new car or not more on it's aesthetics than anything else and think that you don't actually need any major luxury features.

The truth is, though, that you probably need more luxury extras than you actually realise.

Step into a car that is classed as middle of the road in terms of both value and trim, such as by walking into Volvo dealers and sitting in a new Volvo S40. Available for 16,970 pounds on the road and brand new from Volvo dealers around the country, you'll feel like a young child again, having a range of features to play with, from air conditioning to a fantastic CD player with MP3 player connectivity.

What's more, when you take it for a drive, you'll find that even with the smallest engine version, a 1.6 litre, the car feels powerful enough and comfortable enough to drive on long distances.

Leave the Volvo dealers behind and move along to a garage that has a Chevrolet Aveo, a car that's marketed by Chevrolet themselves as an 'affordable 3 door compact hatchback' and which has been produced in one form or another (the same car is also marketed under various different brands, including as a Daewoo Kilos) since 2002.

The Aveo may look the part, but when you sit in it - do you get the same feeling as when in the Volvo S40?

It would be extremely surprising if you did.

The seats are less contoured to your body than the S40's. The steering feels cumbersome. The small 1.2 engine seems so far apart from the S40's 1.6 that you'll struggle to believe that there is only a 0.4 litre difference between them - and that's without taking into consideration the lack of now basic things such as air conditioning or the fact it is one of the least safe cars on the road, according to Consumer Reports.

And whilst some people will argue that the 8,000 pound difference between the basic Aveo and basic S40 will no doubt mean that the Aveo has to be of a lower quality, the main point is that not many people are aware of just how basic a car can be today.

Luxury is something that we once thought of as being an additional extra but now often take for granted. From seats that are contoured to the shape of your body for additional comfort and support to an effective power steering system, you might not class these items as luxurious, but as it's still possible to buy several cars without them, once you realise this, you understand just how much luxury you actually look for in a car.
