Business intelligence and information management are two distinct areas yet they are closely related entities when we talk about business operations. A relation of implication exists between the two where certain features and output for one entity acts as an input another entity. While business intelligence helps in making important decisions for an organization, information management systems helps a decision maker to fetch the type and domain of information required to work upon.

Business intelligence refers to the tools and systems which are used for strategically planning of various processes prevailing in an organization. These tools & systems provide an access to information in a users desired format which aids in decision making using the available corporate data. Generally, these systems describe business in different profiles and perspectives such as:

Product profitability

Statistical analysis

Inventory and distribution analysis etc.

Business intelligence systems are supposed to be the front end systems whereas the information systems are the back-end tier of such system. Information systems are the one which provides an access to corporate data for every application including business intelligence systems. Information management is done using pipelining and arrangement of data from different resources and channels inside or outside an organization.

Every information management tool works in a sequential way following a series of below mentioned steps to be followed on to effectively store, preserve and retrieve data.

Information system captures its input from different sources like ERP, CRM, different files belonging to different departments.

It then converts the non-digital data to digital format and route all the corporate data for further classification before storage.

After data is indexed and categorized, the management system stores it in data warehouse or the central repository of all the databases with a warehouse management tool.

Now, when any application, either software driven or hardware driven, requests access to that data, information system re-routes the view of data to the particular application.

After data reaches the application, it moulds copy of data according to the intent of the user.

Business intelligence tool, in general, requests the access of data from the information management tool. Once data view is granted to the intelligence tool, it provides data representation according to users requirement. Business intelligence tool receives that information and post-process it for reporting, Ad-hoc analysis and OLAP analysis etc. These representation facilitates the activation of decision making process by providing patterns, data representation in graphs, charts etc. Market research patterns can also be identified using business intelligence tools using information fetched by information system and this is where business intelligence tools inherit its so called intelligence.
