How Leaders Are Molded

There is no such thing as born leaders

There is no such thing as born leaders. Even those who have royal heritage and recognized as legitimate heirs to the thrones of their domains do not necessary have the inborn ability to lead their subjects. The same thing applies to the heirs of business empires or even to ordinary people.

The most amazing thing about leadership is that is sometimes developed in unlikely places involving the unlikely persons. A quick survey of historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Mohandas Gandhi, Mao Zedong, Corazon Aquino, and Steve Jobs will illustrate this point. Many historical leaders were neither royalties nor scions of wealthy families or members of political clans. Some of them rose from obscurity and poverty.

Situational factors

People who become leaders are oftentimes thrust into the positions of leadership not because they had the plan and the ambition to become leaders. They are products of the situational factors that forced them to take leadership roles because of necessity or expediency.

One good example of a leader who was catapulted into power because of circumstances was the late former Philippine president, Corazon Aquino. Who could have ever imagined that she would be the central figure in ousting dictator? She was never directly involved nor elected in any political position before she was president.

Although she was the wife of a very popular politician (later political martyr), she always played the low profile role of a plain housewife. It was the assassination of her husband that started her journey to leadership on a national scope.

Personal character and abilities

Many leaders in different areas such as politics and business rose to be among the most recognized influential figures in their own fields because of their special talents and skills. They rose to the position of prominence because of their ability to inspire others to take challenges and achieve difficult goals. They have both the technical know-how and the interpersonal skills that allow others to acknowledge their leadership.

One good example of such leader was Steve Jobs who started his global technology business from a garage with the help of a few but very talented friends.

Another example of a great leader who inspired millions was Gandhi. Although he was not elected in any national position in the Indian government, he was the main inspiration of the nonviolent struggle for India's independence from British rule.

Experience and formal training

Just like other skills, leadership can be developed through experience and formal training (such as a management course in Melbourne). Leaders are not born but they can be made. Many academic institutions and even business organizations offer continuing programs and courses for those who want to hone their leadership skills.

Even seasoned politicians, corporate managers or business magnates can always learn new things and improve their crafts.
