The Joy Of An Elgin Pocket Watch

I have been a buyer and collector of the Elgin pocket Watch for at least thirty years so have gathered quite a collection

. Although each has been different in terms of price, style and quality each one has brought me many hours of viewing pleasure.

The Elgin Pocket Watch Company was active for just about 100 years but did close its doors when the factory was completely destroyed in 1964. In that time they provided many thousands of watches along with some of the other great brands such as Waltham.

It was opened in 1864 and Elgin became rather famous for its new and exciting production techniques. These great production methods and quick and effective processes were used in conjunction with the very latest tooling technology which gave Elgin a distinct advantage over competitors when it came to mass production

In very simple terms they were able to mass produce watches that their competitors were not able to match. In the days before Elgin arrived on the scene pocket watches were made by hand and therefore more expensive. In addition to this they could only be repaired by a very skilled watch maker, so owning one remained the domain of the rich.

In 1920 Elgin truly dominated the American market place with these fantastic production methods. Not only that but at no stage did Elgin compromise on the quality of their product. When you consider this and the time when it happened it was truly leading edge innovation and business implementation.

Most people would recognise Henry Ford as the person who introduced the assembly line and I would not challenge that, however Elgin did create this mass production at a very early stage of their business so credit should be applied there as well.

Elgin had a huge factory which was built on 35 acres of land which had been donated to them by the citizens of Illinois. At its top time of production it gave employment to over 4,500 people and was a thriving business in the city.

Elgin has now ceased production. Sad as that may be it is also great news if you are an investor. There is now a finite market which is reducing and in terms of price that means a single thing, prices can only increase. Right now I have seen Elgin Pocket Watches from as little as $25 and then right up to many thousands of dollars.
