How One Woman's Perspective On Engagement Rings Changed

It's interesting how people's perspectives on life can change in such a short amount of time

. For example, when I first started college the idea of getting married terrified me. I knew that I wanted to get married some day, but I felt a lot safer knowing that some day was way out in the future. Even if a guy tried to give me all the most beautiful engagement rings in NYC, I still would have had to decline his proposal.

My friends liked to tease me that I was living the real life version of a Brittany Spears song where the girl is always flirting and playing with guys' hearts just to dash their hopes and dreams one they truly fall in love with her.

It wasn't something that I was doing on purpose necessarily. I just happened to be a fun girl who guys liked to be around that had a huge fear of commitment.

It was almost like I was just excited by the chase. If I had a crush on a boy, I'd want to get his attention, so I'd make sure that he knew I was available and interested. This usually led to the boy asking me out on a date. I was fine with that. I was even more than happy if he wanted to go on a few dates, but if he started thinking that he wanted me to be his girlfriend, I was done. It just freaked me out.

I was actually starting to be a little worried about whether or not I'd ever be able to get married. It had always been one of my goals in the long term, but I didn't know how I'd ever be able to get there if I couldn't even commit to being someone's girlfriend.

Then things changed. I met a boy that I was absolutely smitten with. I thought that I had really liked the boys that I was dating before, but it was nothing like this. All of the sudden I wanted to be his girlfriend, and strangely enough when he started talking about marriage and children, it sounded like a really good plan to me.

You will probably be surprised by what I say next, but the truth is that I didn't end up marrying that boy. Some things came up that led me to believe that he wasn't quite the one for me, but after dating him I realized that being committed to one person can be a wonderful thing.

Now I am married to the man of my dreams. I don't have any regrets, and he didn't even have to bribe me with all the engagement rings in NYC.
