How Overcome The Jonah Complex?
Jonah complex is a psychological term first proposed by the United States renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow
. To be simple, the "Jonah complex" shows the fear of growing up. It comes from the psycho-kinetic theory of a hypothesis: "people are not only in the fear of failure, but also are in the fear of success. One typical psychology is that when people have the opportunity, they usually choose to escape and turn back in fear. This is an emotional state, and we dare not go do something that actually we can do very well, and we even escape exploring our own potential. In daily life, Jonah complex may be demonstrated by the lack of upward mobility, or "pseudo-fool". There may be a certain degree of rationality of it, however, from the point of view of self-realization, this is a kind of psychological obstacles impeding the fulfillment of ones value.
To overcome the Jonah complex is not only a complicated psychological question but also a social question. First, we must understand own innermost feelings condition clearly and acknowledge that we bear the Jonah complex in our heart. When facing with the pressure which we are not willing to undertake or do not dare to undertake, we must listen attentively to the sound from innermost feelings earnestly and tell ourselves that I can do it well. In this way, we can agglomerate the confidence and the energy in the heart for oneself and overcome the fear. Finally we can demonstrate our ability.
To overcome the fear of growing up also requires us to acknowledge and to admit own limitations. Even if we are defeated, we are equally valuable. So long as we have tried our best and displayed our own highest potential, this is a success for ourselves and we are approaching the self-realization.
In addition, we also must realize that to grow up is our own affair and we cannot always wait for others to discover us. We shoulder the responsibility to unfold on own initiative oneself and to strive for a piece of more ideal development room for ourselves.
The Jonah complex, to be simple, is lack of courage to challenge oneself and prove the highest success that one can achieve. But if we force ourselves to climb to the highest point bravely, we can discover one day that all these fears can be overcome. Then we find that it is true that in life, the biggest challenge has been posted by ourselves.
