How Puppets Can Help With Your Childs Education
Puppets have been around for thousands of years
, bringing entertainment and enjoyment to adults and children alike. There are many different types of puppets, from the sock puppet to the fully articulated marionettes. Countries such as Bali and Japan use puppets to put on plays and some are even 3-4 feet tall and operated by three puppeteers apiece. People of all ages love puppets because they allow inanimate objects to come to life and engage with others through the art of the puppeteer.
Children can especially relate to puppets because of the magic children see in them. They become very fascinated with the performance of the puppetry and that helps to keep them entertained. Puppets can also help to educate children, as well. Using puppets to send informational messages makes it easier (and more fun) for a child to understand. Using puppets with bright colors and amusing appearances keeps kids enticed and gains their full attention. Younger children are very receptive to using puppets as a means to be taught because it allows them to learn visually as well as interactively. Children are more receptive to objects that captivate them and gain their full attention. They often can be more confident with the interaction because they feel less awkward or intimidated than they would if they were asked the same questions by an adult.
Puppet pals
Puppets make learning for a child fun and they will usually relate easier to a puppet than they will with an adult. Sometimes adult interaction with some children can be intimidating to a child and so they feel best when they can relate to something that is part of their own imagination and play. Animals in puppet form are very popular with children because they can be very realistic and more on the abstract and cartoon side of what children are used to seeing in everyday life. Although animal puppets are very well received by children there are all types of other puppets that children can relate to and enjoy interacting with. Soft plush puppets that are touchable are always popular, as well as hand puppets where the user can maneuver the mouth to make it talk. Full body puppets are great, too, because children relate well with other children and these puppets can make them feel like they can really get on their level.
Not every teacher or school uses puppets for learning tools. Many times they are reserved for children that either have special needs or other types of learning disabilities. Teachers in these special classrooms often try to introduce the new puppet at the beginning of the school year in order to get the children used to seeing it everyday. It can be a fun exercise to allow the children to introduce themselves to the puppet and tell it their names as the teacher responds with the puppet. Puppets can help the teacher guide the children in number and letter formation. For instance, the puppet could write numbers and letters incorrectly and then the children can help to show the puppet how it is done the right way. This is a great way to teach the child because then they learn as they correct the mistakes of the puppet.
Puppets can also be great tools in teaching discipline. You could use one or more puppets and one could be the naughty one while the other is nice. This helps to teach children the right way to behave and the consequences for their actions. Puppets can play out different scenarios in a problem and then allow the children to help them find a solution. You can also use puppets to help a child create stories and then have them stand in front of the class with the puppet to read the story aloud. This can help a child with shyness, especially if the puppet is interacting with them while they read the story, with words of encouragement and kindness from the teacher and class helping them along.
Puppets are a great educational tool because they add fun and excitement to learning. They can become class mascots in a sense and help a child to develop all types of important skills such as reading, writing, social, motor and other skills that are essential to their growth and development.
