How Questions On Energy Saving Light Bulbs Answered

We live in a world where slogans, catchphrases and buzzwords are used to hide the real qualities of products and services

. This is true for the so-called energy saving light fixtures including bulbs and tubes with manufacturers promising that these will significantly lessen carbon footprints and financial costs. The question: Are these claims truthful in any way?

The short answer: Yes, if the lighting fixtures used are compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), which have been proven to use lesser electrical energy than their incandescent counterparts. Using the example from the U.S. Department of Energy, the replacement of a single incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb in each home will result to an annual savings of 600 million USD in energy costs.

Add in saving the environment from taking on 9 billion pounds of greenhouse emissions and every home should be encouraged to change their light fixtures to CFL bulbs.

The next question then is: How does energy saving light bulbs actually save on energy? Read on and find the answers.

How CFL Works:

Compact fluorescent bulbs work by emitting light as electrical currents pass through the argon and mercury vapours inside. The chemical reaction produces invisible ultraviolet light that, in turn, activates the fluorescent material inside the bulb. This casts visible light that illuminates the area. Inside the plastic base of the light bulbs are the electronic ballasts, which regulate the flow of electricity into the bulbs. These ballasts also lessen the humming sound caused by the traditional magnetic ballasts of older fluorescent lights.

How Much Energy Savings:

It should be noted that all fluorescent bulbs require a burst of electrical energy to start the chemical processes necessary to light them up. However, energy saving light bulbs consume 75 percent lesser amount of energy to keep them going, so to speak, than the traditional incandescent bulbs. Just imagine saving 75% on your energy costs and you will want to switch to CFL now. Plus, CFL bulbs last 10 times longer than their incandescent counterparts. You will then be able to save on the costs of replacing the bulbs every so often.

How to Choose:

Beware that not all CFL bulbs are created equal in terms of the energy costs saved. You must look at the Energy Star logo to determine if, indeed, the CFL bulb conforms to the international standard for energy-saving appliances and gadgets.

You should also think in terms of lumen and wattage. Lumens refer to the minimum light output and wattage pertains to the energy consumption. Keep in mind that wattage does not refer to how bright the light emitted will be.

For example, between a 13-watt CFL bulb and a 60-watt-incandescent bulb, you will choose the former because of the energy savings. Lest you think that the CFL bulb provides lesser illumination than the incandescent bulb, think again as both provide for 800 lumens of light.

Energy saving light bulbs are a wise investment for consumers who want to save money on their energy costs as well as lessen their carbon footprints. Look into their possibilities now.
