How To Become a Flexible Reader

A good reader can adjust his reading to the type of material he is reading and to his purpose in reading. To be a flexible reader, you must be informed of the different reading styles or kinds of reading and where each is intended for so that you will learn when to use them.

The reading styles of reading can be identified as:

1. Skimming

Skimming is a reading style wherein you go quickly over the written material and pay close attention only to those parts which interest you or which you consider important. As in if you were assigned to locate the topic sentence in a paragraph. This is the type of reading you should use when reading a newspaper. In this style, your eyes move rapidly over the printed material, and only consumes very little time. This style is applied when you need to get the general idea in the material that you are reading.

2. Scanning

This is the reading style which is sometimes interchangeable with skimming because it also utilizes the same strategy of reading the material quickly. The difference of scanning from skimming is that it is used when you look for definite facts in what you are reading. These facts may include words, numbers, short statements, list of names and even paragraphs.

Skimming and Scanning is also called reading by signposts or clues set by the writer. These signposts include chapter titles, boldfaced, underlining or italicized type, and section headings.

3. Study Reading

This reading style is done when you read to understand the main ideas in what you read and how they are associated. Reading complex materials and reading that requires high level of comprehension is when Study Reading style applied.

There are strategies to use this type of reading style: it requires you to read at a slower pace than your normal reading to grasp the idea that the reading material implies; reading aloud also helps with this kind of reading; and for some, reading the material over again helps, too. You must be able to react, challenge, and interpret as you read through the material. This reading style not only requires you to make assumptions, but also be able to produce supporting evidences and relevant information. After using this reading style, you should be able to understand better the gist of what you have read and be able to use it in the future, most likely in a test.

4. Recreatory Reading

When reading magazines, soft cover books or paperbacks, and newspapers for your pleasure and enjoyment, you are using a recreatory style of reading. Your eyes move rapidly throughout the lines of the material, analyzing and examining the main ideas and remembering only the significant parts in the lines or statements.

5. Critical Reading

Unlike skimming and scanning, and recreatory reading, Critical reading demands you not to read rapidly because this may cause you to quickly assume, and accept or refuse, and / or arrive to a false conclusion on the information you read. The strategy in this style is careful reading and objective reading and thinking which allows you to watch out for inconsistent logic and false analogy which can be found in materials such as periodical articles and advertisements which uses publicity stunts aimed to build up and sway you to sell their ideas and products.

Using these different styles of reading appropriately and purposely not only shows that you are a skilful reader but also a flexible reader at that.
