How To Choose A Medical Transcription School

When you decide that you want to work as a medical transcriptionist

, your first important decision is which school you're going to train through. This usually has an impact on how your career gets started after graduation. A better quality school gives you a better chance at a good job.

The first thing to consider is whether you want to train locally at a school you need to attend in person, or if an online course would be better for you. There are good and bad points to each, and which works best for you takes some thought. If you want to work at home, however, I strongly recommend an online course so that you get used to working on your own before your income depends on it. Most schools will send you an information packet on their programs and you can research them online as well.

I suggest confirming that each of the schools you are considering is AHDI Approved. This is a better check on school quality than simple accreditation is, as it is specific to the quality of their medical transcription training. It doesn't guarantee that it's a spectacular school to go to, but it means they've put some work into their program to make it more likely to be a good one, not just some fly by night program.

Checking for AHDI Approval will take care of the basic concerns as to educational quality, as AHDI requires that their training follow the AHDI model curriculum, include at least 35 hours of real physician dictation, involve a Certified Medical Transcriptionist, and more. You don't have to worry that they'll ship you a book or two and tell you to start studying.

There are more factors to consider as you make your decision, of course. Cost is a big one. You don't have to sign up for the most expensive course out there. You probably don't want to go for the cheapest either.

Payment options are another big help. Many medical transcription programs aren't a part of any federal financial aid programs, so you will usually need to find a way to pay for your training yourself. Most schools have some sort of payment plan available to make the expense easier to manage.

You will also want to consider how long the course lasts and how long you have to finish the course. Many online courses are significantly self paced, but do have time limits for completion of the course. If you work at your studies these deadlines are usually not a problem.

Job placement assistance is valuable also, and should be one of your considerations. Finding that first job can be difficult, so any help the school gives you is a big advantage. The sooner you start earning, the sooner your education starts paying for itself. Some schools are partnered with certain employers, and that can be a help.

Once you've looked over the various factors, it's time to pick a school, get registered and start studying hard. The sooner you get your education started, the sooner you can finish and find work in your new career as a medical transcriptionist.
