How To Choose The Right Woods

One of the first considerations you should make when it comes to choosing the right

wood for a project is to consider the colour and shade that you would like to take advantage of. You will see the different tones in most modern real wood furniture. Woods such as mahogany and walnut are far darker and suitable for contemporary design, where as spruce and beech are far lighter and will likely suit a more homely, comforting design. There is a wide selection, so do your research in advance.

Do your research. All high quality timber can be used for most home projects from guitars to real wood furniture, but that doesnt mean that certain woods will always work well for every feature. Some woods are much harder and more tricky to manipulate, and even to saw and drill through. Do your research online and youll usually be able to find out which woods can work for which functions, ensuring that you can avoid investing in materials that actually are not worth the spend. This is very counter productive and certainly a bad idea, especially considering the fact that real wood is not the cheapest material anywhere.

Consider what you are actually making. One of the main decisions that can impact what timbers you should be looking at buying is what you are actually planning to construct and which techniques will be utilised to allow you to do so. For instance, if you were planning to create an instrument, you would need to use a form of wood that was pliable due to the shaping that makes up part of the construction. However, a harder wood would work perfectly for real wood furniture, as the flat design would mean there would less modification of the material needed, meaning less problems for the designer.

Decide whether you want character or convenience. One of the most important decisions when it comes to selecting the right wood for your real wood furniture is to decide on the right grain that you can use for the end product. Luxury and genuine timber will often contain knots and tight grains within the wood itself, which can be fine if youre looking to create something with a bit of character, but not if you are looking to move into something that will be sellable to a broader audience. Always ensure you check woods in advance to ensure they suit the design that you have in mind, and the potential demographic that it will be aimed at.
