How To Cut Down On Household Odors
Even the cleanest homes are sometimes stinky
Even the cleanest homes are sometimes stinky. Sometimes homeowners go overboard trying to avoid unpleasant smells, creating a cacophony of chemical cover-ups, making the problem worse than the original odor. In other cases, things just get out of control and before you know it, a problem is not only something that needs to be fixed or cleaned; it is also making your entire house stink. Smells are sometimes food related, but they may also come from pets, people or biological missteps. One of the major odor causing culprits in a home is the plumbing. You may even need a professional plumber or drain cleaner to restore your home's smell to pleasant and fresh. Anytime a smell is caused by a problem that is not visible, you may have a bigger challenge on your hands.
Bathrooms are a major cause of household stink. This is not just because of the obvious reasons either. Wet towels can begin to smell musty after just one use, so make sure everyone knows to put their towel back on the rack or hook after using. If you have a cloth shower curtain, it should be washed at least once a month and vinyl curtains should be changed every three to six months, or when they start to look grimy. Mildew is a major problem in bathrooms, so make sure yours is well-ventilated. Windows in bathrooms make for drafty showers, but there is nothing better than opening up a bathroom to some fresh air after use. Finally, make sure all floor mats, wash cloths and other materials are washed on the regular basis.
If you have a pet, you may find your home filled with pet odors. Cats are relatively clean animals, but their litter sometimes stinks. Place the box in an area away from food preparations and dining. Make sure it is cleaned on the daily basis and use litter than cuts down on odors. Sprinkling the litter with baking soda is a natural solution to keeping the litter smelling fresh. Finally, consider installing an air freshener in the area to mask the immediate odor following use. Just be sure your cat will still use the box if their odor is difficult to detect.
Food smells are often the cause of bad household odors, so do your best to keep your kitchen clean and your garbage free of food smells. Empty the garbage daily or use a trash can with a lid to cut down on odors. Clean out your refrigerator on the monthly basis and take all food being discarded outdoors immediately. Finally, keep your garbage disposal clean and smelling fresh by running a piece of citrus fruit through it every couple of weeks. The citrus oils will keep the disposal clean and running smoothly and release a pleasant smell in your entire kitchen.
Lastly, make sure the air quality in your home is not a problem. If you have issues with mold, you can bring in a professional for testing and removal. Not only will bad air smell unclean, it may be damaging your health.
