How To Deal With Altitude Sickness

Living in Colorado is amazing after all its the mile high state

. But being a mile high can have its difficulties. Many people from the coast have never even heard of altitude sickness! Now I don't want to scare anyone but you should know you will be living a mile above sea level.

Some people think they should just avoid the "Mile Hi City" but most of Colorado is above a mile high. even Colorado springs is over a mile high, but its not hard to adjust to once you are here. If you are planning on climbing a fourteener, that's a mountain over fourteen thousand feet high at the summit, spend a few days in one of the "low" cities and catch your breath before you try to conquer the peaks. Acclimatizing to the altitude and climate of Colorado is important and how long it takes depends on your body and often has nothing to do with whether or not you have lived here in the past or even if you are in great physical shape.

If you are over worried about altitude sickness, don't freak out, you will get used to the climate. Drink a lot of water, get plenty of sleep, and make sure you eat well. You can always try taking one of the many "cure all's" that are out there but as long as you take it easy your first day or two you will be fine.

When taking a trip to Colorado, especially if your going to be heading up into the mountains the altitude can cause some messy problem. I read a story about a lady who took a job up in Vail. As she was heading up the highway she passed through the Eisenhower tunnel on I-70. Vail pass is one of the highest along that rout, as she was driving she heard a loud bang and thought she had just blown out her tire! She pulled over and could not see any thing out side the car, but when she got back in she could smell coconut tanning lotion. A high pressured bottle had exploded because of the altitude.

If you buy groceries or anything pressurized and then drive up the mountains going up an extra two thousand feet, be prepared for possible explosions! Bags of salad will sometimes balloon up. Cake frosting for some reason almost never makes a mountain trip. Baby formula can be one of the worst and messiest. Remember sometimes its better to buy lunch while you are in the mountains than to take a lunch.
