How To Deal With Career Change Challenges

One challenge you may face while pursuing your career goals is an unexpected expense

. All too often it seems that just as you start to build up your savings, the car breaks down, the dishwasher stops working, or the dog has to pay a visit to the vet because she swallowed something she wasn't supposed to.

When you have a plan to save a certain amount of money so that you can go to school, start your own business, or something else that involves a chunk of change, having to divert that money to something it is not intended for can be very frustrating.

The best way I have found to deal with these types of expenses is to set aside a certain amount of money each month for them. Even if it's just $25 a month, it's more money than you would have if you set aside nothing. In six months, you would have $150. In a year, you would have $300.

The good thing about these types of unexpected expenses is that they usually occur every so many months and not on a regular basis. So by the time something unexpected does come up, you may have saved enough money on the side to cover the full amount of the expense. If you don't have the full amount, the fact that you have something will help keep from dipping too much into your savings that is earmarked for your future plans.

But even if you have to dip into the money you may be saving as part of your plan, try not to let it get you down.

If you look at it as a setback, then negativity will set in and you may start down that slippery slope of negative self-talk. But if you look at it as just a challenge that needs to be solved, then you will be more likely to find a way to recoup the money spent. If the expense requires you to adjust your timeline and extend things out past your original date of completion, remind yourself that it's better to complete the goal at a later date than not to complete it at all.

Cars break down. Pets get sick. Cell phones sometimes fall into a cup of coffee (or worse, into the toilet). The key to handling these little inconveniences is to expect them to occur at one point or another and plan ahead. Just like it says on that bumper sticker-Life Happens!
