Critical Info About Careers With The Usps

Have you ever thought about working for the United States Postal Service (USPS)

? Except for Walmart, they employ more Americans than any other organization. The Postal Service has a wide variety of jobs. The pay is pretty good and the benefits are better than most private companies offer today. Let's review some key USPS careers and what they entail.

The mail carrier is the Postal Service employee seen most often by most people. They handle the final delivery of mail; they get it to the recipient's address. Carriers may either walk or drive their routes. The choice depends on the density of housing on the route they work. Mail carrier is an entry level position. Beyond basic requirements, the candidate needs to have the strength and stamina to cover a typical route.

In contrast to mail carriers, mail clerks work in Post Offices. They sell services and products like stamps and packing material. They have a lot of responsibility for customer service. The clerk position is a good starting point for many career paths into management and sales.

The Postal Service does a lot of mail processing that is not visible to customers. Much of this is highly automated. Mail handlers and processors operate the sorting and other equipment and do those processing steps that are still manual. This field provides quite a few entry jobs that have diverse career paths. Both technical and management paths are available.

Beyond the entry level, there are more senior jobs, typically concentrated in the larger centers. Experience with engineering, management, and sales are all needed by the Postal Service. An example would be a need for engineers to work with vendors to design the equipment layout in a new processing center.

The Postal Service is strongly dedicated to employee education. Training for many different jobs is available at the National Center for Employee Development. Specialized management courses have been developed to meet the specific needs of managers in different situations.

There are a broad range of benefits available to USPS employees. They are eligible for the federal retirement program and the Thrift Savings Program, which is similar to the 401Ks offered by many private employers. They may participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. They have Life Insurance provided, with the option of paying for more themselves. They can accrue up to 26 days per year vacation time, and 13 days of sick leave per year.

It is good to remember that paper mail is a declining business in the United States. Email and the world wide web continue to replace paper mail for a lot of communications and business functions. The Postal Service staff is smaller than it was a few years ago. There are still some job openings, and attrition takes care of quite a bit of the staff reduction. There is no reason to not pursue one of the many USPS careers, but is should be approached with a bit of caution.
