How To Do Keyword Research Like The Professionals
The internet is all about words
The internet is all about words. This being the case, it's essential to use the right words to get your business found. I'm going to share with you some top keyword research tips that could get you on the first page of Google - so listen carefully.
When it comes to keyword research, there are three questions that you need to find the answers to. These are:
which words are being typed in to find a business/products like yours how many people are searching on those words how much competition is there and how strong are they
There are two free tools that I like to recommend my students to use. They are the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Traffic Travis. Using these tools, you should be able to find out most of the answers to these questions. Looking at the source code of the home page of your competitors can also go a long way with helping out. If you look at the meta tags - keywords and meta description in addition to the title tag - you can see which words the competition are using to optimise their website. All valuable information for you to get into the search engine results race.
Step 1 -
Find your words. So in addition to looking at the sites of your competition, you need to go to Google Adwords keyword tool and type in the search terms that you feel most accurately describes your business. Try to stick to just 3 words in regards to the length of your keywords. Press the button and you will see many related terms, along with a bar that will signify how much competition there is.
Step 2 -
How many people are searching. Down on the left you will be given an option of 'Exact'. Select this option to recalculate the figures so that you can see how many people are searching on a particular term. Personally I prefer to select keywords that have under 10,000 people searching per month. To be honest, I actually prefer the 4000 range. With some serious site optimisation and link building, I can usually compete fairly well in that range.
Step 3 -
The competition. Once I have found a few sets of keywords that interest me. I write them on a piece of paper. Now is the time to fire up Traffic Travis for more advanced keyword research. I use this tool to study how well optimised the competition's sites are. Use the SEO Analysis tool in Traffic Travis, to find out what the top 20 sites are and to look at their strengths and weaknesses. The tool will also provide a rating on how easy or difficult it will be to compete for any particular keyword. When you do this, mark down on your sheet of paper what the results are for each keyword and you should be ready to start using your results.
So there you have it, my own way of selecting keywords. I hope that you find it useful and practical advice that you can use immediately. I have been using this keyword research selection method for years and it never fails me.
