Travellers are always on the lookout for the best, most beautiful, and most thrilling places to see to get the most out of their experience. So you've just arrived in New Zealand. You've got a backpacker campervan, a budget, and seven days to take in all the country has to offer. What do you see?
For the adventurous at heat, Queenstown on South Island is a must see. You can start your holiday off with a bang what has been deemed the adventure capital of the nation. Bungee-jumping, hang-gliding, white water rafting, skiing, and ballooning are all staples of this bustling city. At the end of the you can relax among the shops and cafes and take in the beautiful mountain scenery.
As you drive north in your
campvervan along the west coast, be sure to stop at Aoraki/ Mount Cook National Park to see New Zealand's highest mountain. The view here is breathtaking and the mountain lakes are clear enough to reflect back an almost perfect picture of the mountain itself. If you are a skier, the world's longest ski run is right here, running over both Tasman Glacier and Hooker Glacier. For more glacier exploration, check out the ice caves in Franz Josef Glacier. Helicopter rides are also available for those who want to see the top of the mountain.
For a little more adventure on the water, continue north to Greymouth. Here you will find the breathtaking Dragon Cave. Take a blackwater rafting trip over underground waterfalls and through the love tunnel, lit only by thousands of colourful glowworms. If caves make you feel a little claustrophobic, take a rafting tour above ground through canyons, hot pools, and luscious rainforests. For the more experienced rafters, this is the home of New Zealand's level 5 Grand Canyon. At the end of the day, melt your stress away with a relaxing soak in one of the surrounding hot springs.
Now is the time to turn east toward Kaikoura. North of the larger city Christchurch, Kaikoura is an excellent stop for wildlife lovers. Here you can swim with the seals and dolphins. There is also year round whale watching with the mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop to the scene. A bit further inland you will find Hammer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, where you can zip down the waterslides or take a relaxing soak in the hot springs.
From here it is on to North Island, to finish out your holiday in Rotorua. For those interested in history, this area is the home of Buried Village, New Zealand's own Pompeii. Visitors can see the excavated site and see the breathtaking volcanic scenery. For more of this nation's unique history, visit Tamaki Maori Village for traditional Maori dance, storytelling, and cooking prepared on hot stones. Nature lovers may like a stop at Rainbow Nature Springs Park where you can see the Kiwi hatchery and nursery work to preserve these birds the wild. For movie lovers, the original set for Hobbiton in the Lord of the Rings movie is right here. Much of the set has been disassembled, but several roads, hobbit holes, and other structures are still available to see.
