How To Exercise Your Way To Happiness

Problems are a part of life

Problems are a part of life. There is no way to run away from it. It would be great if we could go back to more innocent and carefree days as children when we lived from moment to moment unburdened by nothing except perhaps a scrapped knee or a broken toy.

As adults we begin to understand that the world is not fair, that there are bad elements around that attack and destroy people who are going about their daily lives, that there are bills to pay, that the unexpected happens and we get blindsided.

On top of our own personal crises, there is also the stress of living in these modern but turbulent times which adds to the burden. It is therefore not surprising that hundreds of books cram the self-help section of bookshops and life coaches become celebrities. People are desperate and the pressure often leads to health consequences. It is unfortunate that a lot of people think popping pills that calm and relax is the only way to deal with their problems. Although taking doctor-prescribed medication may work, it is not a stable and long-lasting solution.

In contrast to chemical alternatives, exercise is a healthy and permanent lasting solution. It is free and drug free. You do not have to spend any money to work up a healthy sweat. There are no dangerous side-effects, something you no longer need because as it is, things are already bad enough. Exercise gives strength not only to the body but to the mind as well. It builds confidence and discipline. It even causes the body to secrete those so-called happy hormones.

Why not give it a try? The invigorating effect of a good workout is hard to put into words which is why there is no better way to find out than just doing it. Of course, you do need to first check with your doctor's approval before you start training.

However, although exercise does a lot, it would still be advisable to seek psychological help or counseling. A good psychiatrist would be able to provide the guidance and support you need to help you change the way you see yourself and life in general as well as the way you think and react to situations and circumstances.

To get you motivated, here are 7 ways to exercise yourself to happiness:

1. Focus on the task at hand. Exercise is not easy work so you need to concentrate lest you get injured or simply not work hard enough for the exercise to have any beneficial effect. If you center your attention to doing your exercises properly, you will eventually realize that the feeling of sadness can actually be turned on or off.

2. Regular exercise has its rewards and the most obvious one is a physique you can be proud of. With a healthier and firmer body, you will start feeling more positive. Your sense of accomplishment will inspire you to go for other goals in other areas of your life.

3. Physiologically speaking, exercise also leads to improved blood circulation. With the blood efficiently carrying oxygen to your brain, you would be able to think better and have a clearer and more positive outlook in life.

4. After each session, you may be tired physically but knowing that you have completed a worthwhile task will in turn give you a feeling of self-worth adding to your self-esteem. The degree of exhaustion you will feel will be commensurate to the rewarding feeling you will experience when you are done.

5. As you strengthen your body physically, you are also becoming better prepared mentally for other challenges. With the improvements in your physique and level of fitness, you are able to see and feel the fruits of your hard work. You will start to believe in yourself and in what you can do and this positive mindset will enable you to handle your problems with a clearer mind.

6. Intense exercise causes the body to release endorphins which are hormones that create a feeling of happiness and light-heartedness. This is what is commonly referred to as "exercise high". Long distance runners are very familiar with it because they experience it often and it is most likely the reason why they become addicted to running. When you experience it yourself, your problems would no longer appear to be beyond your control and life would not be so hopeless anymore.

7. Studies have proven many times that exercise also sharpens the mind. If you are physically fit, you are also mentally and emotionally in better shape to deal with your troubles. Your renewed sense of self-worth will hold you up as you go through the process of solving your problems allowing you to remain stable and happy no matter how bumpy the ride may be.
