How To Get A Free Stairlift

Is your age or disability effecting the way you get around your home

? There is a range of new technology available to help those having difficulty to negotiate their home and stairs, although often it can be costly. It might be a better idea to make provisions now to let you stay in your home for longer, rather than being forced into downsizing because you can no longer climb the stairs. Luckily UK councils do provide financial assistant for those who are in need of making their home more easily navigable.

Disabled Facilities Grants are available from councils in the UK, and contribute to the cost of adapting a home to allow the occupants to stay in it for as long as possible. Applications for the grant are approved and given the go-ahead only if the local council considers the proposals reasonable, practical, and necessary to requirements.

The grant must be applied for, and it should be made by the occupant, owner, or someone representing the resident or owner. Landlords may also apply for disabled facilities grants on behalf of disabled tenants.

The occupant of the home must be planning on residing at the property as a main occupant for a five year period, and must live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Scottish councils run a slightly different support system for disabled people.

The grants can be used to pay for all sorts of modifications to a property, in order to make it easier for the occupant to move around and continue to live independently. An occupational therapist will visit the property and assess the home environment before advising on any specific modifications.

These modifications could include installation of an additional bathroom or toilet, installing a through-floor chair lift, installing a stairlift, widening doorways, installing ramps and adapting light and energy controls to make them easier and safer to use. The grant is eventually paid based on a financial assessment of the occupant's income, outgoings and assets, unless it is for families or disabled children under nineteen years of age.

The grant normally only covers a portion of the proposed works, with the maximum amount of grant available being thirty thousand pounds per application, minus contributions which the occupant themselves is expected to make.

So if you're struggling to get around your home, why not turn to your local council and see if they can help you stay independent in your own home for longer, with Disabled Facilities Grants.
