How To Get A New Mexico Drivers License

Your New Mexico license to drive requires that you take specific steps, depending on your situation. If you are under 18, then you'll have to go through the Graduated Licensing System. If you're over 18 but not yet twenty-five, then you will have to complete the None for the Road DWI awareness class. Those over age 25 can just apply directly for their New Mexico drivers license - if they have no driving while intoxicated convictions.

This is all pretty simple, it just seems complicated.

For any drivers license in NM, the applicant must have a Social Security Card or other proof of identification number, a proof of identity (state-issued ID, certified birth certificate or equivalent), and two proofs of residency in New Mexico (utility bills, library card, etc). At least one of your forms of identification must include date of birth.

Graduated Licensing System

If you're under eighteen, you will have to go through New Mexico's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). There are three levels to the system starting with an Instructional Permit. This learner's permit allows the new driver to drive with any instructor or qualified driver over age 21 (who must be in the passenger seat). The minimum age for this permit is fifteen and the student driver must use it for at least 6 months.

Upon completing a approved driving course and passing written examination, the student can then move to the Provisional License. Except for special exemptions, this permit allows the teenager to drive without supervision except between the hours of midnight and 5a.m.. A driver with a PL is also not allowed to have more than one passenger in the vehicle unless another driver of at least twenty-one years of age is also in the vehicle. The under 21 passenger limit has an exemption for members of the driver's immediate family.

After a guardian or parent has certified the teenager has completed at least 50 hours of practice on their PL, 10 of which must be at night, the teenager can take a written road exam and vision exam to qualify for a full Unrestricted Driver's License. To get a UDL, the application must have held both an Instructional and Provisional drivers license for at least twelve months (combined) and not have any traffic violations within ninety days of applications for the UDL.

The None For the Road DWI Class

The None for the Road Class is required for drivers aged 18 to 24 or those over 25 with a driving while intoxicated conviction. The NFTR class is a self-study course through the University of New Mexico. The exam can be taken anywhere with an Internet connection.

Drivers Over Age twenty-five Without DWI

All other drivers over age twenty-five must complete a written exam, an on-road exam, and an eye exam.
