Usually search engines measure the popularity of a website by the number of links pointing to it. In other words when they need to display the result of a search based on a certain set of keywords, the most popular websites are displayed first which results in driving more hits to those websites and less popular websites to starve.

The second important issue is how to get backlinks. This is far from being an easy task. In order to be useful sites linking back to your website must be better ranked than yours otherwise there is no benefit from getting them from unknown websites.

Here are few basic techniques that may help you in getting quality backlinks:

- Exchange links with complementary websites: Take the time to search the web for websites that are not competing against you, but those that offer complementary services and suggest to them to exchange links. An example of a complementary website would be one that sells oil for the cars that you are selling.

- Write articles: Another good practice is to locate well ranked online article directories like Articlesbase.com and publish articles related to your field of expertise and at the end of the article add a link to your website.

- Engage the community: Find a community that might be interested in your domain. This can be a forum or Q&A website. Usually forums are more restrictive and you need to be there for quite some time in order to be allowed to submit links, otherwise you will be considered a spammer. Q&A websites such as Quora.com or Startups.com are easier because you can ask a question or answer questions asked by others thus starting a discussion in a simple manner.

- Be active in chat rooms: If there are many people reading articles or visiting forums there are many more that are not interested in reading and prefer chatting instead. A good practice is to spend some time on chat rooms and engage into real time discussions with those people. The advantage of this practice is in being closer to your audience and you can have a better feedback. If you are able to convince someone and made him interested in what you do, you can be sure that he will become your disciple and spread the word around him.

These basic techniques will give a good starting point, but you must keep in mind that success will not come within few days. You have to be ready for many months of struggle and efforts in order to notice progress. You need to have the will and the perseverance in order to achieve success.
