Leaving a post-it note, sending an email or a text message is certainly not the way on how to get out of a relationship
. There's no easy way to do it but when expectations are not being met anymore and one is no longer happy, the relationship has to end.
Plan your timing and choose a place where to do it (do it in person). Please don't do it on your anniversary or any special occasion because this might be a traumatizing experience for your partner. Do you want him or her to remember the pain each time of the year? While you want to be sensitive about timing, I don't mean that you have to keep stalling either. The sooner you do it the better. Pick a date and stick to it. You would have to do it anyway so gather up all the courage you can get and just do it.
Honesty is the most important thing you can give your partner when it comes to how to get out of a relationship. No matter how hurtful the truth is, say it. There's no reason why you have to lie about the real reason why you want to move on a start a new life. It will hurt more for the other person to not know the truth or what went wrong. Be honest but I didn't say you have to be brutally cruel. There are ways on how you can say things without sounding that you are dying to walk away.
Trying to keep the conversation calm and rational is also crucial on how to get out of a relationship. Tell your significant other why it's not working anymore and why you think you both have to move on. Don't forget to use "I feel" statements. For example- "I feel that your being outgoing and extroverted is not what I really want in a partner that I would want to settle down with someday". Try to avoid getting into an argument if you want an amicable breakup.
