How To Handle Toddler Discipline

One thing that most parents do not like to do is discipline their child

, especially if they are just a toddler. I hate toddler discipline but you just can't avoid it if your child is badly behaved otherwise how do they learn right from wrong?

When I was a child I used to get a good spanking on occasion but now I realise that I deserved it, but in todays society parents look to other forms of toddler discipline to avoid having to give physical punishment.

Even as a toddler in their very early stages of life you should be setting a few basic rules. Not too many, about 4 or 5 is a good figure. One thing you should remember when setting these rules is that you need to be firm with them. If you set rules then you should stand by them otherwise there isn't much point. Explain to your toddler what the rules are and then if they break one go over the rule again, every time they do so. Your toddler should also realise that you being the parent they have to do what you say.

Of course, toddlers are well behaved as well as sometimes badly behaved. When they are well behaved then give your child praise and this will reinforce to them that with good behavior they get praised but with bad behavior they will get disciplined.

When your toddler misbehaves then act with a firm authorative voice. If they are asked to turn the TV off for example and they won't, be firm when you say "Do as I say", don't say it with anger. If your toddler discipline is not working and your toddler is being defiant don't give in. If you give in this is a sure sign to them that they will just act defiant next time and get their way.

One effective form of toddler discipline is the time out. If your toddler is being defiant then you can send them to a time out room or a place. Let your toddler knows that they will have to stay in the time out place so that they can think about their behavior. Explain to your toddler they will stay in the time out place or room until they are ready to come and sit and talk with you about their behavior. This is a simple form of discipline but very popular as it is effective.
