How To Improve Your Art

Every artist, professional or amateur, should always be looking for ways to improve their artmaking and art processes

. However it is not always easy to break yourself out of a cycle of bad technique or creative block. Truth is, there's no simple way to do it, but we've compiled a couple of great artist tricks to help you get your work back on track!

Workspace

Having a great workspace can help fuel creativity and allow you to store your finished artworks, half finished pieces and blank canvases. Use your workspace as a place to escape and surround yourself with inspiration. Make sure there's plenty of natural light so you don't feel suffocated, and give yourself regular breaks if you find yourself stuck with a creative block.

Rule Of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a great way to make your artwork balanced. The rule suggests that artworks should be divided into nine even segments, through vertical and horizontal thirds. If you want, you might even consider drawing such lines onto your canvas before you start, in thin pencil. The rule suggests points of interest should take place at, or near, points of intersection. Whilst such rules are not hard and fast, they can be helpful when you are staring at a blank canvas.

See Negative Space

The negative space on your canvas is essential in creating an artwork that looks professional and complete. Tinting your canvas means no unsightly or stark white background, so even less covered areas are part of the piece. You should also consider whether you want a detailed background or a more blurred look, to accentuate the foreground. Regardless, all of the canvas should be used and a lack of detail should not be teamed with a lack of depth or warmth.

Use Rhythm And Flow

Rhythm will add life to your artwork, especially if it is not a realist work. Work with the texture of your canvas and create interesting lines that have flow and vivacity. Van Gogh comes to mind as a great painter of rhythm, with each brushstroke creating movement.

Rely Less On Others' Art

While the artworks of our peers and other artists can be inspiring, it is best to not rely too heavily on others work. While you can certainly draw ideas from styles, content and even medium, most artwork looks better if it draws from reality, or concepts within your own mind. Seeking to copy from an artwork or photograph can make your work look dull and flat, so try to paint what you see around you.
