How To Install A New Thermostat

Installation of a thermostat is one of the easiest projects for a home owner to complete.Tools required for thermostat installation are a screw driver, a utility knife or wire strippers and

plastic wall anchors.

The first step in installing the new thermostat is to disconnect the power source to the existing unit

and then remove it from the wall. Typically there is a cover plate that snaps off which will reveal the

screws holding that are used to hold the thermostat on the wall. Be careful when you disconnect the wires

from the old unit that none of them slip back inside the wall to where you cannot reach them.

Take your new thermostat and attach the wires to it. Four wires are usually attached to a thermostat. A

red wire that is shared by both the heating and cooling system, a green wire used for the fan, a yellow

wire for the air conditioning and a white wire for the furnace. You should consult your instruction manual

that came with your new thermostat to be sure of the wire layout.

Once you have attached the wires as required you will then place the new thermostat on the wall. Typically

you can screw the unit into the wall where you took off your prior unit by inserting plastic wall anchors.

Once screwed to the wall there is generally a plastic cover that is placed onto the unit that is used to

hide the screws and wires from your view.

The only step left is to test your new thermostat unit to make sure it properly turns on and off the

heating and air conditioning in your home. This is a simple project easy enough for beginners. In most

cases you should be able to complete this in no more than 15 minutes.
