Storm doors are secondary doors. They are added to existing exterior doorframes (on the exterior side). They essentially provide an extra layer of protection against the elements. They also add an extra barrier between intruders and the inside of the home, though theyre primarily installed for weather protection.
Storm doors help to keep wind and outdoor air from penetrating the home through the space between the main door and the frame. Keeping outdoor air out and indoor air in helps to save on the cost of energy (both your heating and air conditioning bills).
Storm doors also keep rain from hitting the main door. This is especially beneficial for homes with exterior doors made from wood. Wood deteriorates faster when exposed to rain and moisture. Glass and aluminum or steel doors stand up better to rain. They will extend the life of a wooden door by years.
They also provide an extra measure of security. They shouldnt be relied upon to prevent possible break-ins. However, the extra barrier does discourage would-be intruders who dont want to spend the extra time needed to get past an additional barrier.
Storm doors range greatly in price from a couple hundred dollars to close to one thousand. The price of a particular model depends largely upon what kinds of materials it is made from. Those made from aluminum are typically less expensive than those made from steel.
If you don't mind spending a little extra, you can get yours custom-designed and manufactured. This is an excellent option if you want to match existing exterior hardware. Your storm doors can be made to match anything from custom redwood gates to exterior spiral staircases.
Installing your own storm doors can be a significant money saver. Dont attempt it, though, unless youre a relatively experienced do-it-yourselfer. Its not a job for a first-timer.
The first thing to do is measure your existing exterior door. Dont assume that its a standard-size. Take measurements to be certain. You must also take note of which side it hangs from so you can purchase accordingly.
Once youve gotten your new door, make sure you handle it carefully. Its going to be heavy, and it will probably have at least a little bit of glass. You dont want to break anything before you even get it hung.
It will be helpful to get a pair of sawhorses if you dont have them. Lay the storm door across the sawhorses as you unwrap it and all the pieces that come with it.
Your product will come with its own set of instructions specific to its type and brand. However, the general steps for installation are outlined here:
1) Mount the top rail. Be prepared to trim some of it away with a hacksaw if necessary to get a proper fit.
2) Apply screws in every hole. Make sure you don't over-tighten. Over time they may otherwise become impossible to remove if repairs ever need to be made.
3) Install the side rail next (the hinged side). Again, you might have to trim it to get it to fit.
4) Drill holes for the door handle and lock. Do this while it's still on the sawhorses. Refer to your manufacturer's directions to ensure that you do this part correctly. Remember, every model may be a bit different.
5) Hang your storm door on the hinges. Start by inserting one screw into each hinge to begin with. This will hold it in place so that you can then go back and place the remaining screws.
6) Place the remaining long frame. Again, be prepared to trim off excess if necessary.
7) Apply the hardware (door and lock case).
8) Install the safety chain at the top, if your door has one.
Many of today's storm doors come with closers. The closer shuts it automatically. If yours comes with one, install this last. Follow your manufacturer's instructions for this part.
