How To Make An Effective 5s Presentation

The 5S game is commonly used in training employees to have definite work objectives and an organized workplace

. The essence of this game lies in the personal experience of discovering the difference between a cluttered and a clean, organized workplace. The game involves hands-on training in proper waste elimination.

However, employees or trainees may not be able to appreciate the 5S game if the goal and process are not presented clearly. Initially, the meaning of 5S needs to be explained thoroughly. The role of each member towards the fulfillment of the process also has to be defined.

Since the goal of this game is to maintain order and cleanliness for an effective and productive workplace, the waste factors must first be identified. The downtime must be reduced by first focusing on the eight basic wastes. These include defects, overproduction, waiting, not utilizing employee skills and abilities, transportation or material movement, inventory, motion, and excessive processing.

Employees also have to understand the different kinds of workplaces, to clearly identify the waste factors. The third-class workplace is where employees throw out their garbage and no one cleans up. The second-class workplace is where employees throw out their trash but someone else cleans it up. And the first-class workplace is where no one throws any trash and everybody is cleaning up. Having the employees identify the type of workplace they currently have and the workplace they want to have will help them appreciate the 5S presentation more.

Using a 5S game, the advantages of the 5S system should be defined clearly. An effective 5S presentation helps employees appreciate the advantages of time management, customer responsiveness, visual control, quality, and safety of a work area. Employees have to be aware that each part of the process is a step towards progression for their own benefits.

An effective 5S presentation can be done through a simulation game to improve communication and interaction between members.
