How To Make Sticky Toffee Apples

Sticky toffee apples, or candy apples as they are known in North America

, are a favorite sweet treat around autumn, when apple harvest season comes upon the western hemisphere. This enjoyable treat, which basically consists of an apple covered with a layer of sugar, is usually a staple during the celebration of various autumn festivals like Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night.

As with most other brilliant food inventions, sticky toffee apples came about almost by accident, when expert candy-maker William W. Kolb was experimenting with red cinnamon candy in 1908. He wanted to use red cinnamon candy to develop new sweets for the Christmas season. Little did he know that when he randomly dipped an apple into the candy mixture he had made, he would instead be making a most memorable Halloween candy treat that would stand the test of time (although sticky toffee apples are actually more of a Christmas treat in Germany and in Latin American countries). Amazingly, William W. Kolb sold his first batch of candied apples for only 5 cents each he would eventually sell thousands of the sweet treat each year.

Making sticky toffee apples is as easy as 1-2-3, as was demonstrated by how its inventor discovered it. Its basic components include freshly picked ripe apples and a sweet sugar mix to cover the apple with. The usual sugar coating commonly consists of water, corn syrup, sugar, and cinnamon. Often red food coloring is also added in order to replicate the apples original color. By boiling the ingredients together, one is able to create the sugar syrup. Make sure the syrup boils to 300 degrees Fahrenheit that is, when the sugar has become toffee - in order to get the right texture. The sugar syrup will harden around the apples about an hour after the apples have been dipped into the mixture. Once done, dont forget to put the final touch on the sticky toffee apple a popsicle, barbecue stick or a thick wooden skewer to hold it with while eating!

Over the decades, variations of the basic sugar syrup recipe have also been made popular some add glucose syrup, corn syrup, even vinegar!


You might want to enjoy this sweet treat all year-round, but it is worth noting that sticky toffee apples are quite difficult to make during the summer, when the weather prevents the sugar coating from hardening. So come Halloween, its best to set aside the diets and bring out your sweet tooth instead, so you can bask in the deliciousness of sticky toffee apples long enough to last you for the whole year!
