How To Make Writing Your Novel As Automatic As Clockwork
Most people like to read books, or at least watch movies
. And for many people, they share a common thought when they finish enjoying the story. "I could have written that." The truth is that many people have the capability to write a novel. The more novels you read, the more you understand that this is something you really can do. However, getting something from a vague idea in your head to a specific physical book is a long and arduous process. It's one that many people don't have the willpower or motivation to complete. However, when you break it down into parts, it's really not that difficult. All you've got to do is spend an hour or two a day, and before long you'll be ready for a publisher.If you have a vague idea for a story, and start out looking at a blank page on your word processor, you aren't going to get very far. This the main cause of so called "writer's block." The reason you can write, is that your ideas aren't very well formed. You've got to do some work on them before they're ready to come out.
The first step is to create your main character. Just write down as much information about him or her as you can. Nobody will ever read this, so you don't have to worry about writing silly things or making mistakes. Come up with as much background information, physical details, psychological shortcomings, and quirky behavior as you can. Once your main character is complete, you're ready for the next step.
This is when you come up with the basic idea of a story. It might be easier to write this out on a big piece of paper, rather than typing it. Instead of writing it out in details, make it like a story board. You don't need to be specific, just get the general gist of the story.
Now that's finished, you need to work out each scene. Just write out one paragraph for each scene, so you get the basic idea of what happens. Don't worry about detail at this point. Think of them as like scenes in a movie if it helps make it easier to think about.
Now the character, story, and scenes are all set up, now's the time to start writing. And if you've done a good enough job setting this up, writing will be a piece of cake. Each scene should be easy to write, and it will feel like you are describing something that already happened, rather than trying to make it up on the spot.
