How To Make Your Home More Energy Efficient
By now, many homeowners have taken at least a few basic steps to make their home more energy efficient
. If you are like most, you have already invested in energy-saving light bulbs and a programmable thermostat to better control your home's HVAC energy consumption. However, you may now be wondering what additional steps you can take to further improve the efficient energy use inside your home. There are a few additional steps most homeowners can easily take to cut down on energy consumption and save money.
The Cable TV Box
One of the appliance that uses the most electricity in most homes is the cable box. In fact, studies have shown that this small box often consumes more energy than a refrigerator, an HVAC system and other devices that otherwise are known as energy drains. The most efficient step to take is to eliminate the cable TV box altogether. Simply cutting cable out of your life can eliminate the need to pay for your cable bill as well as for the energy associated with use of the box. However, if you simply cannot live without your cable box, there are other steps you can take. If you have more than one box in your home, consider downsizing to just one box. When a box is not in use, power it down completely. It may take awhile to boot back up, but this minor inconvenience can save a tremendous amount of energy.
Blinds and Curtains
You may have heard that a significant amount of energy is lost through your home's windows. Windows are fabulous in a home because they allow you to enjoy natural sunlight in your home. However, they can also drain energy by allowing the sun to heat a room quickly in the summer months and by allowing cold air to penetrate into a room during winter months. Installing double-pane windows in each room of your home may be a goal, but it may be too expensive for most homeowners to undertake. However, simply closing your window coverings in rooms you are not actively using can help you to decrease energy consumption in your home. If you have windows that do not currently have coverings, consider the benefits associated with investing in coverings today.
As a homeowner, you may make a considerable number of upgrades to your space. You may shop for decorative office furniture for your home office, upgrade your home's flooring to add beauty and value to your space and more. Some improvements may cost you money, but others can save you money. Consider how taking these steps can reduce your home's energy efficiency and ultimately can save you money.
