Forget hiring expensive designers or using complicated and pricey graphics software. I am about to show you a simple four step way to learn how to make your own brochure. Once you master these four steps, you'll be creating effective, inexpensive and professional quality pieces in no time.

1. Decide what you want your reader to do

This is the first, and probably most important, step. Do you want your reader to learn something? Buy something? Call the number? Deciding in advance what your "call to action" is will be critical as you learn how to make your own brochure.

2. Determine how you will distribute the brochure

Will the finished piece be mailed? By itself or in an envelope? Handed out in person, or delivered electronically? All of these questions will have an impact on the layout and design of the piece, so be sure you know how you will use it before you begin.

3. Choose a template, layout and design that meet your needs

If you will be mailing the piece, choose a size that won't require extra postage. Save costs on envelopes by making it a self-mailer. If you plan to distribute it electronically, choose a format that can easily be read on a standard computer screen.

4. Add your content, photos and logo

With the call to action in mind, add your copy and any graphics. Keep the copy relatively short and easy to read. Tiny type in a brochure is difficult to read, and your readers will quickly lose interest. Try bullet points and a medium size font.
