Most dog owners would be concerned if the pet shows the symptoms of intestinal parasite infestation. A parasite infestation can be transmitted not only to other pets in the household but to humans as well thus eliminating these pesky parasites is very necessary. A dewormer for one type of worm will not effectively eliminate another type thus for the treatment to be effective, proper diagnosis will be necessary.

Whipworms, roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms infest more that 30% of dogs. Heartworm, another type of parasite that is found in the dog's heart is even more deadly as by restricting the blood flow to the vital organs, this parasite can result to the death of the dog. Dogs generally have worms in their lifetime. Puppies are born already infested as the worms are transmitted by the dam.

The process of ridding a dog of the parasites inside its body is not as easy as getting the dog to take the worming pill. Pet owner that choose to deal with the infestation with the least effort would simply get OTC medications but as most wormers would not be effective for all types of worms, the infestation will not be eradicated. Considering the life cycle of worms, a one-time treatment may not totally eliminate the infestation.

All puppies have intestinal worms thus they would need an assertive deworming treatment. Treatment that must be started at 2 weeks of age must be administered again when the puppy is 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks of age. This course of treatment ensures that the life cycle of the parasite will be stopped as the first treatment will deal with the mature worms and the next treatments will be for the worms that are yet to be hatched. The same kind of treatment must be given to the nursing dam. Monthly deworming medication must be administered until the dog is six months of age. When infested dogs defecate, the excrement contains larva of the parasite thus the infestations would spread easily. Dogs can easily get reinfected because of these animal's tendency to eat poop. To prevent reinfection, dog owners must ensure that the pet has an ongoing deworming treatment by giving the dog a wide spectrum anthelmintics every three months

So what is this dog heart disease we are talking about? The heart, as you know, has four chambers, each having a set of valves that it operates with. The problem sets in when some of these parts stop working, and the other parts will then have to make up for it by working harder. The heart then fails to function as it normally should. While dogs don't get heart attacks, the complications that arise from heart problems will eventually lead to heart failure when left unchecked.

Coughing, labored breathing, tiredness, fainting and blue tinged gums are some symptoms of canine heart disease. Also, observe if the tummy of your pet is distended. This disease causes high blood pressure which makes fluid leak out of blood vessels. This fluid then builds up in the lungs and abdominal cavity of the canine, thus making him look bloated.
