How To Potty Train A Puppy: Tips For New Dog Owners

A new puppy is a fantastic addition to the family

. However, it does take time to teach your new member how to behave properly. Learning how to potty train a puppy successfully takes lots of patience, time, and dedication. The following tips should help you begin your new adventure and make it a pleasant experience for both you and your pup.

Using a kennel or dog crate for potty training purposes is often the most successful method. When purchasing a crate, remember that the puppy will grow and try to buy a kennel that will allow him enough room. It's also more cost effective to by a large enough kennel right from the start, instead of having to buy a bigger one later on when your pup becomes an adult.

This area should have a comfortable bed or blankets in it and some toys. It needs to be a place where your puppy will feel safe, but also have some entertainment as well. Dogs tend to try very hard to not use their bed for a restroom, which is the reason why kenneling is often the best technique to use for potty training.

There will be lots of whining at first and possibly even howling. During the day, try to let him out for a bathroom break every hour, until you know just how strong his bladder muscles are. As he gets a bit older, you can probably let him stay in the crate for longer periods. Be sure to allow time for him to run around after he's been cooped up in the kennel.

Take him outside as soon as he comes out of the crate. He will need to use the restroom bad enough that he'll go as soon as he's outdoors. Eventually he will understand that bathroom breaks are taken outside only and then the crate can just be used when you need to leave the house or for bedtime. The kennel is a perfect place for puppies at night, so they don't get the urge to roam around and make a mess.

Be sure to give your new puppy lots of praise when he goes to the bathroom outside. Having some treats on hand won't hurt either. The more positive actions you use, the sooner he will understand that he's doing the right thing. Try to be patient with him and remember that it takes a while for bladder muscles to function fully. Male dogs usually take a bit longer than females to develop these muscles fully.

Don't let frustration get a hold of you. Rubbing the puppy's nose in his mess, swatting him, or throwing him outside might be too confusing for him. He's only doing what his body tells him he needs to do; go to the bathroom.

He's too little to know that there are specific places where this should take place, so don't think he's doing it on purpose. Learning how to potty train a puppy is definitely hard work. Follow these tips and you should be able to train your new pup in no time.
