How To Protect Yourself From Sunburn

, people are starting to wonder what they should do to protect themselves. There are several general recommendations, and some that are better for certain people or in certain situations. Remember that getting sunburned is not required in order to have damaged skin.

Tanning is dangerous and should never be done. Along with that so-called 'healthy glow', you are getting mutations in your skin cells that could eventually lead to cancer. Choose spray-on tanners if you just have to have that bronzed sheen. And remember, avoiding the tanning bed isn't enough-- you must also avoid laying out in the sun.

Sunscreen is great, but pair it with more clothing or other options for the best results. A large amount of the damage done by sunlight is done by UVB rays, while burning is caused by UVA rays. Because of this, most sunscreen has no protection or no tested protection against UVB rays, no matter what it says on the bottle.

Clothing does not provide as much protection against harmful UV as people think it does. While sunburn-creating UVA rays are stopped quite effectively by clothing, a thin barrier such as a t-shirt doesn't always keep the UVA rays away. There are specialized pieces of clothing that are made to filter out UV rays of all kinds, which are available at outdoor gear stores. They are worthwhile investments if you spend a lot of time in the sun.


Your face, including your lips, ears and eyes, need the most protection as they are constantly exposed. Use sunscreen, wear hats, and choose glasses or sunglasses that are rated to protect against UV rays. Remember that sun damage is cumulative, so using sunscreen every day is probably almost as important as slathering it on every two hours during an outdoor activity.

Over-exposure to the sun can be dangerous, but people who do not get enough sunlight can also experience problems, such as a lack of vitamin D. The key is moderation, as in most things. People who spend a lot of time outdoors are the most likely to be adversely affected by sun damage, and they are unlikely to have problems getting enough vitamin D, as only 10-15 minutes of sun exposure a day is needed. But people who work in offices and rarely venture outside can be prone to a deficiency if they don't get it from some other source, such as fortified milk.
