How To Reduce Stress With Breathing Techniques

While it really isn't the best news we need to be aware of the fact that stress kills!

The age at which people are getting heart attacks is continually getting lesser. We have to take stress and its repercussions seriously and find ways to reduce if not eliminate it from our lives. A certain amount of common sense will go a long way in helping us cope up with stressful situations. There are some things we have control over and some we don't; the sooner we accept this as a fact of life, the better off we will be.

When your stress levels reach the point where you feel anxious all the time, irritable, suffer from headaches and upset stomachs; sleepless nights and all the other stress related symptoms, you are in trouble. Let's face it, living a permanently stressed out life will only serve to put in hospital. Constant stress takes a very heavy toll on our health and general well being.

Breathing is something we do naturally without any conscious thought. It is part of our being alive. You will find many helpful breathing exercises to help you control your stress levels. Breathing is a free, natural and simple way to relieve stress; anyone can perform the exercises and they can be performed at any time, any place.

You can follow the simple guideline outlined below:

You can choose to sit or stand; make sure you choose a very relaxed position. Now inhale slowly while counting to 5 - you need to inhale through your nose and count silently in your head. Now exhale, expelling the air out of your system through your nose. Count to 8, again silently in your head as the air is expelled through your lungs. Repeat this for a minimum of 10 times each time you decide to perform the exercise. What could be simpler than this?

A few tips to keep in mind when performing the breathing exercise to control your stress levels are - When you breathe in and out expand your abdomen; try not to raise your shoulders. Expanding the abdomen is a more natural and relaxed method of breathing. Your lungs get to fill up with fresh air and release stale air very effectively. Repeat a few times as a breathing exercise to calm you down and center your self. Alternatively, use it in conjunction with the meditation technique to help you provide stress relief.

Deep breathing is another useful breathing exercise that helps to reduce stress. Take a minute to pause and consider the fact that we seldom breathe right because we are too busy. Instead of deep breaths which expand the diaphragm, we take short shallow breaths that do not help us to relax. Sit or lie down and practice taking deep breaths; expand and contract your abdomen and let each breath fill your lungs.

Constant practice will soon make breathing right a natural part of your daily existence. You can perform these exercises any where you choose to and can do them while sitting or lying down. If you sit make sure you keep your back straight and relax the shoulders.
