This is naturally achieved by being raised in a bilingual home. It can also be achieved through formal study or self-directed language study. Immersion in the language, such as being involved in an exchange program is also an excellent way to gain fluency. With a strong foundation in the language, a potential translator can move on to the second step: the skills of translating.

The second in how to start a career in translation has to do with the specific skill set necessary to be an effective translator. These skills include being an effective communicator, especially in writing; ethics issues; and knowledge of the best practices of the industry. It is also very helpful to understand how to run a translation business. For instance, learning how to get clients, win contracts, manage projects, and build a portfolio are all skills that will facilitate the launch of a career in translating.

Most translators specialize in a particular type of translating. Because of this, the third step in how to start a career in translation projects is to acquire expert knowledge in the industry for which you want to translate. If a translator is having a hard time getting started, sometimes doing volunteer work can provide enough experience to get paying jobs.
