How To Start A Greeting Card Business
One things for sure, if youre into photography
, drawing, arts, calligraphy, and even writing, then the greeting card printing business might just be the thing for you.
If you havent known it before, the greeting card industry is remaining strong despite the emergence of the e-cards. As of last year, more than 8 billion greeting cards have been sold, and most of them are custom greeting cards. It is certainly one of the strongest industries that can really be lucrative if you happen to have the skill for it.
If youre thinking of getting into the greeting card printing business, there are two ways you can do it: one is to do it freelance; and two, you can create your own custom greeting cards and launch your very own custom business.
If youre more inclined to go for the freelance business, then this article is for you.
Going freelance is the easiest way to venture in the greeting card business, not to mention that its the cheapest. As a freelancer, all you have to do is to submit your work to a design company and you can already start with your endeavor. The benefit of doing it freelance is that you can work on your own creation and focus on your very own designs of your custom greeting cards. You just have to present it to the company youre selling it to in order to get paid for it.
The downside however, is that you have to go out and sell to every greeting card company and you will have the experience of getting rejected many times. The company may or may not buy whatever it is youve offered.
As an artist for greeting cards, the good thing is that you can work in any medium and in any style you like. You can choose whether to use pastel or oil for your paintings; modern or romantic; and even the other freelancers you work with. Somewhere or somehow, a greeting card printing company or a conventional printer will be needing new ideas and designs, and you will be there to give them that.
And if you happen to be more inclined to the design aspect rather than the writing part, the company that bought your greeting card can assign a writer for your design.
You can also submit your designs to those big businesses whose demand is much bigger and more varied. But it would definitely be more competitive. Or, you can always start small and submit to smaller companies where you can learn everything you need to know about the greeting card business. Youll be able to rub shoulders with editors, photographers, and other graphic artists. Plus, you will learn how to tackle assignments, as well as meet projects on a deadline. Even a m id-sized company will definitely give you the chance to work out your concepts and ideas thoroughly.
Write the companies youre interested in. Ask them if you could send your samples first. Also ask for guidelines. And once you have them, just follow according to the specifications of the company. You need to prepare your portfolio as the companies will surely want to see if your design is their type.
Just remember to not waste your time and energy selling work that is inappropriate for your target audience. Follow the companys guidelines carefully and you wont have a hard time providing them the design they want.
