Quitting smoking is a very difficult challenge

1. Plan Ahead. Pick a date to quit. Talk to people who have kicked the habit. Find out what other former smokers have done to quit successfully. Before the quit date, it may be a good idea to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked each day. Analyze the times that you typically smoke. Try to figure what can be done in lieu of smoking during those times.

2. Get Support. You don't have to be alone in your smoking cessation efforts. There are many good telephone hotlines that offer free counseling. Tell your friends and family about desire to quit smoking. They can be a great source of support.

3. Learn to Change Habits. As mentioned, smoking is, in part, a psychological addiction. We are all creatures of habit. For instance, maybe, you are used to having a cigarette after you eat. Or maybe, you like to have a cigarette first thing in the morning. Try to find activities that you can substitute for smoking. Chew a piece of gum after you eat, rather than smoking a cigarette.
