. This common problem is one that can circulate rapidly through groups that keep their hats, coats and other personal effects in shared areas. An issue that circulates frequently through classrooms and offices, it is luckily one that is also easy to identify and treat.

Itching is a common symptom that those with this problem experience. It usually occurs behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. This is due to a skin allergy from the saliva of the louse. It can take up to several weeks after the onset of the issue before the itching will occur, and not everyone is prone to experiencing itching when these tiny insects are present, as not everyone is prone to the allergy. It is however, a pretty distinct signal when no other visible signs apply.

There are several ways that you can look for visible cues that lice are present. One super easy way is to tip the head over a piece of paper, preferably white paper. The hair can then be combed down from the root to the end of the strand with a fine toothed comb. If lice are present in the hair you will likely be able to see the skins that are cat off by young lice.

You can also try looking for nits which are the egg cases or larvae. These have an ovular shape and are white and easy to view after the larva has hatched. There are numerous other substances in the hair that may be mistaken for these insects such as dandruff, actual hair follicles and even hair lacquer. Many people find that using a magnifying glass makes it far easier to make a positive identification.

Your final proof is the spotting of the feces of these small insects. This will be present on the pillow, the collar or within your hats and scarves. If present it will appear in the form of small black specs. Once you have made a positive identification you can begin a plan of treatment which will include a thorough shampooing with the appropriate, medicated soap, as well as cleaning of all hair accessories and amenities, clothing and linen.
