If you are still using the typical methods to search for a job such as networking

only with close friends, Craigslist, trade publications and online job boards, you can easily get frustrated when you do not get any leads. In these changing times, you need to use everything at your disposal. One of the best tools to use is LinkedIn.

With over 35 million members in over 140 industries, LinkedIn is the ultimate job search weapon of the 21st century. Most members are adults not looking to date you or post on your wall. Most Fortune 500 executives are on LinkedIn and they have disclosed where they work and where they have worked in the past. Talk about a network of professionals at your fingertips.

Below are some tips to help you find a job in LinkedIn:

a) Get the word out


Use LinkedIns status update to inform your connections that you are looking for a new job. Nowadays, job search is all about getting the word out there. The more people know you are searching for a new position, the higher your chances will be of getting word on an opening.

b) Get LinkedIn recommendations

If you have been recently laid off by your manager, ask him or her to recommend you on LinkedIn. A strong recommendation that highlights your strengths and ascertains that you were a valuable employee will go in a long way to present you as a suitable candidate for other positions you might come across in LinkedIn.

c) Find out the industries that people with your background working.

Look for employers who are likely to require your skills in their companies. For example, if you are a web developer, use the advanced search function in LinkedIn and search for employers using keywords like Ruby on Rails, XHTML, JavaScript, etc. If you are looking for positions in your area, use the ZIP code function to get more targeted results.

d) Check how people progress in their careers

Find out how people with similar skills like you have been progressing in their careers. Check the companies they came from and where they headed to. This information is available on a users employment history. Chances are that a person may have created vacant position when he left the company where he was working in. You can contact these companies and ask whether they require your skills.

With proper use of LinkedIn and especially its advanced search function, you can know of new positions that match your skills and have an upper hand over other applicants using other job search methods.
