In The Emergence of Multicultural Christianity, Dehner Maurer's vision of a multicultural church is on full display. Maurer overcomes a series of roadblocks, beginning with an assault on his intentions in his quest to seek the unification of Blacks, Whites, Asians, and all ethnicities.
What began with two people in Maurer's basement has grown to over 1500 regular worshippers. Overcoming the first hurdle involved the eradication of all elements of racism. To that end, the author states, "The truth always brings glory to God. The first man was neither black nor white. He was made from dirt, which can be a variety of colors, brown, black, dark, dusty, or sandy." Clearly, Maurer is suggesting to his readers that racism has no place among believers.
During the journey of planting a church, Maurer's group, which at that time had risen to thirty, was cut in half when fifteen people left. Maurer received extensive criticism when he made public his idea of a multicultural church. He states, "We were told it couldn't be done, it would never work, and that we would fail. We were told it was not God's will, and it wouldn't last."
Dehner Maurer's ambitious blueprint has stood the test of time, fifteen years later. Now, over 1200 adults represent thirty different nations, a true ethnic blending of cultures. On his way to planting a multicultural church, Maurer faced endless questions like, "Could you sit under the authority of someone who's a different race than you, what would your friends, your family, or your coworkers say?"
Maurer provides several basic criteria for becoming multicultural:
1. The congregation must comprise of no more than 80% of one race.
2. The elders and deacons must be multicultural.
3. The paid staff, the worship team, and music must be multicultural.
4. The multicultural purpose and vision must be written and seen by everyone who enters the building.
The Emergence of Multicultural Christianity by Dehner Maurer is the go-to book for anyone who, for any reason, is interested in multiculturalism in the church. Calling upon real-life, personal experiences the author provides a wealth of information on how to achieve a true blending of the races in an environment conducive to worship.
