How World of Warcraft Helps Creativity
A major problem in business is the training of new employees and the development of existing employees
. Most people do not relish the thought of having to train. Most of us prefer to do things the way we have always done them and the new and fresh ways of doing things are very often unwanted.
Unfortunately though for a company to stay relevant and have an edge of its competition constant refinement of process and thus the necessary re-training of staff is necessary. No matter what type of training a company wants to give its workforce it is always necessary to train staff members in team skills and train managers in supervisory skills.
The training that is necessary is often perceived as boring and uninspiring by employees and are therefore not openly embraced.
Many people are happy in their current positions and do not have any ambitions of moving higher (or at least don't want to put the effort in to secure a higher position). Due to the lack of desire to be trained most training courses in the workplace are ineffective or the skills taught are forgotten very quickly.
As a solution to these problems many business executives would be well advised to look at World of Warcraft (WoW). This innovative and engaging game is the most popular massively multiplayer online role playing game in the world.
Some executives may have heard of this game due to prominent business leaders citing its ability to develop certain managerial skills in players. Even though many prominent business leaders advocate the playing of this game many people in managerial positions have never heard of it. If you have never played computer games extensively or are new to them they you will probably think, mistakenly, that they are mostly played by kids or teenage boys. This is not at all true!
The majority of people who play world of warcraft are between the ages of twenty-three and thirty-nine. What's more these adults play an average of twenty-three hours each week.
Although these facts may be interesting and enlightening your are probably wondering what on earth it all has to do with staff training in the business world.
More than you realise!
In WoW, performance is measured in terms of experience points. Experience points are gained by grinding (killing beats and baddies) and by successfully completing quests you are set. These quests and enemies become much more of a challenge as you move up the levels. Players must reach level 80 from a starting point of 1 by training their character, completing tasks and by grinding.
The degree of complexity and challenge increases dramatically as you advance across levels. The completion of higher level tasks are rewarded with more experience points and better equipment within the game.
There are also other ways to progress within the game. Social interaction is an intricate part of the game with entry into, or acceptance by, groups and guilds, that are filled with real people, being needed in order to fully appreciate the warcraft gaming experience.
In order to full enjoy the entire gaming experience team work is necessary and leadership skills are essential.
